I am gonna buy a detector soon. Unfortunately, I'm dizzy with overload of how many detectors they make. So I'd like to ask  your opinions. First of all, I live in SW Oregon and am led to believe that the soil is mineralized here. That means I need a PI detector, correct? Secondly, I'm after gold or silver. Preferably gold. I intend to search old mine tailings or search for pocket gold, or if I'm feeling brave, even mineshaft walls themselves.
Thanks, folks.

A PI detector is NOT your only option.

Look into the VLF gold machines.

I my self would not buy anything that did not have manual Ground Balance.

As homefire said, you have other choices besides PI.   But as he says, make sure your machine has Ground Balance capabilities.   I was out this weekend detecting in soil that was so heavily mineralized that no matter where I set my magnet down it came up with soil attached.   My Garrett GTAx chattered so much I had trouble hearing the signals over the background noise.   On the other hand, the Fisher F4 and and the White's Classic 5-ID had no problem handling the heavy mineralization so that the signals came back nice and clear.   (and neither of those can be considered high $/ high end detectors)

There's a very active Metal detecting club in the Grants Pass area, and if I am correct, they know ALL of Oregon very well- If you want I will put you in touch with them- Wise

Thanks everyone for the great replies. I just found out about the Grants Pass club and I live there, so that is pretty handy. Currently I'm looking at White's machines. So far they look great, especially happy that they're American made!

Hi Dal I am from Grants Pass too, I just bought my detector.  I will try to make it to next months meeting, was wondering if you got your detector yet.
The Minelab I use is working out great so far.  Will be giving it the true test this weekend.
hope to see you at one of the meetings

Hello RJKeidel,
Good to hear you like your minelab. I still haven't ordered one yet. I visited the old "paradise mine #2" today just to see what I'm up against. It's difficult to read how they worked the mine and what tailings to search. Certainly makes it apparent that you need a detector to find anything at all.

I have a friend that i met while lobbying for the timber and mining ind back in the late 80s
actually a few, he is the first i had contacted since getting my detector as I was thinking about checking out some of the public areas for panning.  I also went to washington DC with Tom, I believe he has since moved to Idaho.  I haven't really made the efforts to get in touch with everyone yet, Will be happy to get numbers and email addys for you.  I have Randy's for you, I will mess it to you after this Smiley
how exciting for you, don't get discouraged.
