I checked out the article on Wikipedia on pull-tabs, and from what it said "The design of the pull-tabs was addressed by Daniel F. Cudzik of Reynolds Metals, who in 1975 developed stay-tabs"
So, just because he invented it in 1975 doesn't necessairly mean that it was mass-marketed that year... so the question goes - around what year would you say that over 75% of the soda can's and beer cans were converted over to the newer style?
I'm asking this, because I hit a park last weekend that came up with the older style pull-tabs.. so the good news here is that I have a better chance at possibly getting some older coins (hopefully).

I haven't foun anything definite, but based on memory, I'd say this synopsis (from wikipedia/Aluminum_can) is probably pretty accurate:

"The early pull-tabs detached easily. The New England Journal of Medicine reported a case of one person ingesting a pull-tab that had broken off and dropped into the can.[citation needed] The design of the pull-tabs was addressed by Daniel F. Cudzik of Reynolds Metals, who in 1975 developed stay-tabs.[4][5] This design reduced injuries and reduced roadside litter caused by removable tabs. The mechanism involves utilizing a scored lid with a tab to depress the lid.[6] The tab can be used as a lever to push the scored region into the can, opening up a hole. By the early 1980s, stay-tabs had replaced pull-tabs in much of the world"  (emphasis added)....

I'd say the transition period in North America was probably 1975 to 1980

BA,

Engineers spent thousands of hours. Companies spent millions. For what? All towards the miracle of the "stay tab."

Which is defeated by morons all over the world who break them off regularly and toss them away into the grass where we find them decades later.

Oh, the humanity of it all. Oh, the aluminum-anity of it all!

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

You can take all the cans you want to the beach here, but get caught with a glass bottle and get a nice big ticket
