Detecting Thumbs Down Trash can be a benefit as well as a negative thing. For one thing, if you're finding trash-then you're definitely in a spot that had plenty of human activity. Trash can indicate the kinds of activities that went on in an area. For instance, if you are finding lots of square nails out in the woods or in a lot, then you've just had an indication of a former dwelling or a fenceline being in the area. If you're finding pieces of cast iron pots, stoves, or kettles, then you know that a dwelling must have been around in the area or at least that folks had camped or whatever in the area. I've searched empty lots and found all sorts of automotive  related junk like spark plugs or valve stems, etc. That means there must have been some mechanic work done at the site years ago-maybe a shop or just a shade tree mechanic spot. So you see, junk can tell you things. Trash is a good indicator of things that went on in the past at a site. I always look for bits of broken glass in fields. Pieces of old green or blue glass are a good sign. Pieces of brick are also good signs. China plate pieces are excellent indicators of former dwelling sites.Follow the trash and you just might find the treasures that the site has tyo give up. Great Pray Violent Detecting

homefire, I've found some of my most interesting finds where just trash told me that a dwelling might have been in the past--you can't always see evidence of old homes, etc. Plenty of times the structures are long gone and rotted away.

I had asked several of the old-timers around my area, about one of our fields.  I had noticed, as well as my father.  That when the ground was worked up, that your could see a lot of china ware all over the ground.  Well, that lead me to a 1856 Large cent.  I go up to the field when it is worked up, because I have collected a lot of interesting pieces of pottery, glass, etc.  Also, the most interesting relic is a oven door that has a eye in the middle.  With rays coming from all sides.  Very interesting.

Thanks for making this post, very useful, to advanced and beginners alike. Wink

has an eye in middle with rays all around-sounds like some sort of masonic symbol-"The All-Seeing Eye" type of thing--I'm not  a mason, but it just sort of reminds me of masonic type symbolism--from what I've read and heard about...not really sure though

Well, your guess would be just as good as mine.  Everyone that I have shone it to, have no clue what the design on it is.

Hm.  I never really thought about trying to look around about it.  That does raise an interesting question.  Some of the days, when I post my best finds of this year, I will post it.  I technically found it four years ago.

Good post! it can also lead you to a old dump. And we all know the good things we can find there. I think if we ever find extraterrestrial life the first things we will find of them is their trash. It could precede the actual physical discovery of them by millions of years!! Idea

trash means people where there and anywhere people are at valuible things and historical relics can be lost -- folks are by nature mess leavers -- but not all trash is equal -- older trash and having the ability to know old from new ( screw cap type bottle necks are newer and older bottles had no screw threading or crown top seals  ) --- often its not what is  there now but rather what was there in the past  that makes a place good to hunt -- the sight of lots of old glass bits , red bricks chunks and older type debris on the surface of a spot as i drive by it often sparks my interest in a spot .  a sharp eye and a keen mind are often your best tools.
