Is a pinpointer a definite must have?  I was pricing them and they seem very steep in price.

They are not an absolute necessity.

In some coin hunting situations the are extremely useful.

I do not use a pinpointer.

I have been hunting for over 40 years and when I started there were no pinpointers.

So I just never got in the habit of using one.

I merely pull handsfull of dirt out of the hole and run it past the coil.

To each his own though.

I am sure plenty of chaps will follow this post and tell you how you must have a pinpointer and blah blah blah.

Try it without.  If you have no problem locating your find then you know you did not need one.

I do have an el cheapo pinpointer.

I took it afield twice.

It helped me locate 2 coins.

I have never used one.

It seems some folks believe that faster is bester but I don't move that fast.

I would like to build a PI pin pointer to check crevices for Gold!

If you want tips on how to pinpoint with your detector, you can find them by using our search function at the top of the page.

Every detectorist should know how to use his or her detector to pinpoint the target-----you never know when you're pinpointer will fail or when you have to choose between batteries for the detector or the pinpointer.

Personally, I've tried pinpointers (and still occassionally try them), but so far I've found them to be more trouble than they are worth.   Other members swear by them.   To each, their own.

I'm considering getting a pinpointer. I've been using my son's old $20 national geographic detector as a pinpointer. I gotta say it has saved me some time and back problems. Detecting

Harbor Freight has them for under $20.00.

You need to doctor them to make them weather Proof but it can be done.

The tip is NOT water Proof.   Silicon works.

If you gOOgle the thing , you will find tones of Info.

Even Tune Up Tips.

Do you ever use the metal coin probe?

I like the pinpointer - I bought a Garrett (a bit pricey but works great)  Being a newbie, it has been a great help in locating those soil covered coins.  I am still practicing the pinpointing with the MD - the pinpointer does so much faster.

When started I didn't have a pinpointer. I did okay. After a while it was something I wanted so I built one. I used it for a while and it was functional, but it was big and hard to carry in my pouch and eventually I quit using it. Just recently I picked up a (Tesoro) Treasue Mate and always have it with me. Using a pinpointer really speed up the reovery and when I go to parks it reduces the amount of diggiging I have to do in manicured grass. You can do it without, and I recommend you learn to pinpoint with your detector first... but at some point in time you need to get one, you will thank me.

Cheers

Sean
