Still very new at this, but today had (what to me is) an unusual event.  Had my Tracker IV set to Tone, with both Sens/Disc set at about 3 o'clock.  Would get a solid tone on the Tracker, then checked with the Pro-pointer and no tone/vibration.

The Pro-pointer was on, and when I swiped it across my pocket that held a couple coins I'd found - it worked just fine.  It hit on coins and metals all morning; but about three times got good Tracker hits - and not a sound from the Pro-pointer.

This happened a couple times.  Any ideas?

Did you dig to see what it was if its a low tone it could be gold or nickel I dont know why the pinpointer wouldnt pick it up unless it discriminates some metals I would test it against different types of metals.Foiled

If you had not already dug down to try and find it, the object may have been too deep for the pinpointer. They are not as sensitive as a full detector circuit. You do realize that the hand held device is only for use when you simply cannot find an article in the soil you have exposed. It's not for use prior to digging for the item.

Thanks for the quick responses!

It was a high tone on the Tracker each time; now I'm thinking I need to go back and dig those spots.  I was using the Pro-pointer to pinpoint the spot I would be digging.  Guess the other targets were shallow enough to register - and the ones I didn't dig may have been too deep.

A beginner's error, sounds like; that's why I posted here.  Figured there must be some reason for the Pro-pointer not sounding.

Thanks again; this is a great website and I've learned a lot already.

Cheers,
Terry

Forgive me for the smile that came over my face just as I read your reply. Yes, a beginner's mistake but easily made.

pinpointers are just that --they help pin point the item -- its range is only range 1 to 2 inches --oh yah if the item is very shallow (say 1-2 inches -- like a coin at the foot of a slide in a tot lot) it will pick it up  by running it along on the surface --but if the items over a few inches deep nope - since it does not have that much "range"--- now once you dig down say 3 inches and sweep it in the 3 inch deep hole it will hit on the 4 inch deep coin  that was 4 inches deep since from the hole bottom to coin is now only 1 inch -- make sure to slowly sweep the hole sides with the probe tip in case the item is in the wall of the hole.  Grin and always after recovering the item and covering it back up be sure to  recheck your hole --there might be another coin in there.  Detecting
