I'm thinking about getting a 2nd detector for when I'm with the grand kids or neices/nephews ages 7-13 yrs.  Maximum investment would be $100.  I know that used is cheaper but was wondering if I needed to stick with new?  What do you think? Idiot

This hobby isn't for everyone and therefore there are plenty of good used detectors that were purchased by folks who didn't know that the hobby wasn't one they would enjoy or have time to pursue. Many of these units were stuck in a closet or leaned in a corner of a room and weren't used that much at all----So used can be a good choice. Be cautious and ask if you can test the unit for a while before making the decision to purchase. If seller is wary of letting you take it for a "Test Drive"-so to speak, then ask if they would mind you detecting a few minutes in their yard while they supervise---this will give you an idea of how well the unit is working. Never give very much over half the original cost of unit even if unit is a few months old. You can buy a Tesoro Compadre for around 165 bucks new and some of the Bounty Hunter units cost around 100 bucks new - which is the price level you mentioned. There are other units you can buy new for less than 100 bucks, but I don't know if the quality would be all that good or how well they'd work...Harbor Freight has some for around 50 bucks-but I'm not sure they work so well???

Get an used Compadre from Tesoro. Great Great

Trust me on this one : 15O hours----->3.035 coins.

Mina has the 8" coil, but the version with the 5,75" coil will do OK.

One 9v battery is more than 20 hours of great fun, and the unit is lightweight and adjustable in height to duit kids.

All the above advice is good= BECAUSE= have seen youngsters detecting, and their friends are amazed, many times have seen them step on the coils, ride bicyles, on them and sometimes even use them for canes, JUST PART OF THE LEARNING PROCESS, when they get on to it a little better, they can keep friends back, and they will be more cautious theirself Wise
