after much review, i settled on a nice lightly used whites xlt.  after reading and playing around with it,i headed to the backyard for a spin..............i dug up 5 bottlecaps...can....foil...mason lid.........6 pennies........3 quarters.  the wife looked out the back door and asked me if there were moles in the yard.....she had no idea i was in digging heaven. anyway, im still learning the functions and tones of this machine. this weekend im going to an old 1930's mining community where the mining company built the cottages for the workers to live in...its nothing but sandstone where the cottages rested on now + a boarded up mining cave. anyone have any suggestions on how to attack this with my xlt?   no one has ever detected here as it is my friends private property.

until you get used to the detector, dig every target......and make sure you fill all your holes  Wink   there are lots of tips already posted here on searching old homesites which should help you --- just use the search function at the top of the page.

Start where you think the front door was for each unit. Keys in and out of pockets cause lost coins. Follow the sidewalk or foot path to the common area or street. Check the back yard fanning out from the back door. Dig every single target. When you remove a large piece of junk like a copper pipe, search that spot again for targets that were masked by the pipe.

Grasshopper, you have a long job ahead of you.

If you can see where a clothesline used to be, search under where the clothes would have been hung.  Check around any fence posts or where posts had been.  Try to imagine where people might have sat or lain such as under a tree.

Congratulations on the new machine.   You got a good, proven detector there.  You will make a lot of finds with it.
You have been given good advice from the previous posters.   Dig everything.   Work slow.  Re-scan where large items have been removed.   Also, take everything you dig with you.  Everything.   That way when you come back on subsequent hunts you will not have to deal with it a second time.
Good luck and happy hunting!   Detecting

Go Up Go Down

Looking forward to going out on my first search hopefully this weekend.  Have to figure out tho on the old air force base here who  I should call to get permission to dig from.  It is now all city property as the air force turned all property over to the local city.  Former Chanute Air force base here  was a major training base for the af.  As a former security policeman here, I know all the areas the students used to congregate and recreate at.  Any advice on who I should call in the city establishment??

you should be able to check your city code and ordinances on line.  If you can find that, it is usually pretty easy to tell what type of permission (if any) you need to hunt on city property.   If the answers aren't clear that way, find out what department is responsible for administering the parcel you want to hunt and get permission from them.
