Suppose I'm coin-shooting and find a nice coin.. I get out my redbook, and find that it's supposidly worth XX dollars. What/where is the deciding factor on if a coin is truely worth shipping it out to be graded & slabbed? $50? $100? Where do you draw the line?

I haven't looked, but I'd guess that having a coin expertised is pretty expensive.

Worth is relative until you sell an item. When you sell a coin valued at $100.00, it's not likely you will receive that amount. Instead, you will be more likely to get the wholesale value of the coin. Whether or not to have it graded professionally is up to your own choice but should be based on wholesale not retail.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Well the redbook should give you an idea of grade and you can grade yourself then if the coin is worth enough that the grading pays for itself then its worth it but it also is upto you if you just want to have it professionally graded or are happy with it as is for your own collection. I think you get a better deal by getting multiple coins graded though. There are a few services out their but only two that really matter so dont just get it slabbed from some third rate grader. I think its PCGS or something like that and I forget the other one.
