I am new to detecting and wanted to know about the best soil conditions for metal detecting.

Is dry soil best or does wet soil work better, like after a rain?

What about compact soil versus soil that has been tilled?

I am curious to hear your opinions!

Thanks

With the exception of the BFO, most detectors target much better in damp soils.

 Wise

Loose soils are good.

Compacted soils and Hard Pack will show more ground response in some machines.

Good Ground balancing fixes that.

Welcome to the Forum.   Great

I vote for wet for two reasons. Better detecting conditions electronically and easier digging.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

I agree.....especially with the easier digging part -----too bad wet or even moist soil is so rare where I usually hunt.

Thanks for the comments - it looks like wet loose soil is the winner!  Detecting

most detectors like some form of moisture they read the metals in the ground better.I have to whites metal detectors and even in the manuals it tells you they will work better in more damper ground. Detecting
