Hi All,

What is your method for locating the property owner?

In particular I am thinking of a commercial site that is now abandoned and would like to obtain permission to hunt the grounds.  I assume that I will be contacting the local city offices and they will direct me to the correct department.  It would be nice if this information was available online somewhere though.

I'm sure in other circumstances / locations it would be different.  For instance out west it might be a state, or county agency, or the BLM or some other source and would depend on the type of hunting you are doing.  I am asking with a specific circumstance in mind, but would like to hear what all have to say on the subject in the areas they familiar with.

Thanks,

County assessors office --- look for the property tax rolls.   Most of the information it will be on line.   As for outwest and which agency owns/administers various parcels......do a seach of the entire forum for "BLM" +"claim" and you'll find the links that will help you (or wait for Idaho Jones or GoldDigger or one of the others who have them handy to pop in here)

Not sure about Michigan but most states have  county tax rolls on line.
Try to Google the county+ state tax assessors office  they may have a link you can type in an address that will tell you the owner.  If not its off to the land office.
I see me and BA are typing at the same time again.

As previously stated the county assessors property search. Do a Map search for the parcel. and then request data. If the owner is an LLC  which many vacant properties are get the name of the corporation and go to the state's Coroprate licence board and do a name search for the LLC. It will give the officers of the and an address and telephone no.  It may have a registered agent as well. In my experience. If the registered agent is different from the President of the LLC you are dealing with a big corp.. If there is no registered agent or one of the board members is the registered agent it is more likely a mom and pop operation. Go to the president for permission. Another indicator is where the principles of the LLC live. Go back to the assessors office and search for the president and other members. Rarely they live on the property or near by and you can visit them which is best.
I know it sound complex but it is the only way I know.....What to do if the LLC is registered in another state? Use your best judgment.  Treat Trusts the same way you do a LLC. except the principles are usually listed on the tax rolls.

The tax collector always knows the property owners. I did a search once on a property in Washington State and found that the owner had died intestate with no heirs and I paid the back taxes of just under $900.00 dollars and owned 6 acres for my trouble. Sold them a few years back after a road was put in and power lines to the property were available. You never know what kind of treasure you will find when you do your research.

Cool story GD, what a nice bonus find.  ?Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.? Smiley

Thanks for bringing this question up, Dayhiker.  My own reading so far has not handled the specifics of obtaining landowner permission.  Another piece of the puzzle falls into place.  So what's the update on your search?  Did you meet with success?

Believe it or not, you can still pick up property today for back taxes. Read this:

Instead of gaining permission on a certain piece of land and particularly if its owned by the council or local parish,  Just ask which land your not aloud to detect on, or any by laws to restict the use of detectors ?, all other land in accessible.  After a brief talking to my local councilor thats the way to do it.  Farm land is another matter, go and knock on the farmers door, simple as.
