I am a beginner ... are there any detectors out there that are just junk that people try to push on someone that is inexperienced?

Thanks!

Mike

What MD to avoid ...

All of them this is a dead hobby there is nothing left to find. Sorry I get carried away sometimes.

If you stick with the major brands you will be ok. Some work better then others if you read some of the links here it will help you make a good choice. I have heard some bad reports of detectors from China but I have not tried any of them can not say from personal experience.

Hi Mike

The thing is to find an MD that works well and that fits your pocket no need to get your self into dept is what I mean and like Seldom said the best way to find out about the different MD?s around and how well they work is by reading the posts and asking the other members about the MD that they use I?m sure that they will be happy to inform you.

Regards Xavier

Dont buy Radio shack, Tandy, Chinese, stick with good brand names forget about the rest take your time before buying ask around do your research first once youve spent your hard earned Blood, Sweat and tears on something your married to it for a while.
You will also get more value by buying 2nd hand rather than from new.  Theres a few bargains about check out Ebay or anywhere else online.  Get a 2nd opinion before you buy theres a load of guys here that will try to help you out good luck

You should check any local pawn shops in your area, sometimes they have some pretty good detectors on hand. Most of these guys are willing to negotiate the price to make a sale, also you can request a trial period to make sure the detector works correctly. My excaliber was purchased at a pawn shop, I was able to negotiate the price down over a hundred dollars and was given a few days to test the unit for leaks etc. in writing. Local trader magazines also have adds that contain detectors as well.
Wish you the best.

Hi !

Wanna go for coin hunting ? Clad and older ones? Go for a digital detector with a work frequency inferior to 10 Khz.

Wanna find more relics and jewelry? Get a MD with a higher frequency than 10 Khz, and NO DIGITAL UNIT. In this case you will be happy to "beep and dig" !

HH

I agree with Johnlaw on the pawn shops. We got our Gold Bug 2 from one, looked new not a scratch on it and had ear phones for $400 plus tax. First time in a long time I was in the right place at the right time. Did not think to request a trial period to make sure the detector worked correctly.
