I would have to agree that starting out in your own yard would be best.I started out detecting in my yard, didn't find much at first, but once I learned my machine settings and learned to swing a little slower I was finding Barber dimes Smiley You will also learn how to dig and fill a hole without leaving much evidence you were ther. Good luck and post your findings for us!

Thanks Todd, Paul & Sammygirl for your suggestions I appreciate them. They were helpful, not just criticizing like some members.

I found the local school yards, the local city parks and tot-lots are "user friendly". This was my first season hunting here in Minnesota, and never had any problems with police or officials. I got good at recovery and you can't tell I've been there.
Occasionally people ask what your finding, but other than that, I've had a blast! I tend to hit the areas when there isn't any people around, or away from where I'm detecting. If it gets busy, I pack up and come back later.
Happy hunting! Smiley

What about an empty lot, no fence, where the catholic church always holds the annual fair? I guess I should find out who owns the lot? What about an empty old barn near the highway?

getting permission is always the "correct" answer.   whether it is always done that way or not is another story.

Any place like you describe is good, just get permission before you go on private property. Learn how to read a site some areas may be more productive than others. Where did people park there cars at the annual fair( reaching in there pockets for there  key's they may have pulled out some good old coins with them)where were the food stands located. An old barn near a highway, did they have a veggie and fruit sales stand? Good luck, and Happy huntin....DW
