Sometimes the best place to start digging is in your own backyard.  No need for permission since it's your own yard and it gives you the chance to perfect your technique before moving out into the other areas.  Then there are other homes parks so on.  Make sure eto check local laws and such as your area does seem to be fairly tough on metal detecting in certain areas.  If there are other people in the hobby locally they can assisst greatly in where you can and can't hunt.

Haleysdrean,

Schools and sports grounds are great spots, but ask permission.
Also swimming spots by creeks, lakes, rivers.
Happy swinging.

I don't think being concerned about the legality  of hunting in state parks is " the Last thing to ask about" ! In my state you can not hunt in state parks with out the permission of the superintendent and then anything found is property of the state. Also our county fair grounds are gated & locked & you are not allowed to hunt there unless gates are open which is only when there is an event.

once you know that you must follow your state or country rule so.you don't ask where to dig.
you're allowed to search and read maps and history but when it comes to real money you don't ask you simply think how to dig.
otherwise forget treasure hunting and try birds hunting.

Here is how I go about it.
State parks will have a sign somewhere that states thier rules. At the bottom there will be a phone number. Call it.
Then I will find a park super or a park ranger and ask them.

City parks
Look for the rule signs and call the number, call the city police department or find a city cop and ask him about detecting rules in that city. Go to the local Chamber of Commerce and ask.
Always be polite even when told no.
If you are realy serious about detecting you could find out who is on the city council and try to make contact with some of their members and teach them about your hobbie.

What you will find is that state and city authorities are usualy misinformed about our hobbie.
Just some ideas that have worked for me.

Thanks

Todd
