I live in Scarborough here in the Uk, it has loads of history, I know you are NOT aloud to go round castles and other historic sites, but there are still other good places to search. When I have seen other detectorists working, 99% of them miss 12 inches between sweeps as they walk? in other words they are not searching it thoroughly? So I don't mind if a particular site has been done before, because it is certain items are going to be missed, I try to sweep at each coil diameter. I am looking forward to having a good day somewhere when the weather allows me to.

Hi,
Yep, I ALWAYS swing the coil twice over the area the size of the coil, once in each direction.
If you have a "slow-ish" recovery time on your machine a good find might be "masked" by iron or something next to it.
Going back in the opposite direction you'll hit the good find first.......

I was wondering the same thing - being a "newbie" myself.

I was thinking of looking for listings of activities in large nearby parks - events like fairs, festivals, etc - and searching a day or two after one ends. I suppose it would be more "surfacy" (is that a word?) stuff, but possibly a good way to start.

Also, any walking trails/paths that are preserved areas along old rivers - built over old existing routes - might be good.

Don't forget "surfacy" stuff can include gold or silver jewelry, not just easily spendable coins (unlike the stuff you have to sell if you want any value from it  Wink )
