I love the beach at night, after the people leave you can find lots of coins, and rings, its good if you have a PI.  Grin

The advantage of starting with your own yard is not only do you get a chance to learn your machine, but you also get to learn how to dig proper plugs so you can recover items without destroying someone else's yard or a public park.  Poor recovery techniques by some get the rest of us banned from a lot of places.   (For more on recovery, do a search on "digging" or just scan the older posts here in the Beginners board)

Please allow me to emphasize the importance of learning good recovery techniques.  In areas with carpet grass I use a probe and a screwdriver.  In other areas I place a small sheet of plastic beside the hole and put all dirt on it.  This lets me replace all the dirt into the hole.  My goal is always to leave the area looking as though I have never been there.  In central Texas I've noticed that if I dig a plug and replace it, then return a couple of days later there is a dead patch of grass on the plug.  It may be that I'm doing it wrong but whatever the reason I seldom dig plugs.

A general rule when looking for places to hunt is "anywhere people have been, especially if they had their mind on something else".  Parks, playgrounds, sand volleyball courts, the shaded ground under trees, the possibilities are endless.  The older the area the better.  Welcome to the hobby!

John

im a beginner myself. if someone tells ya a good place to hunt....its already been hunted. i have been using the internet as a resource. for example: google your town/county for old pictures.....or , say, 1930's photos of whatever. find somewhere familiar like an old building/schoolhouse/etc... and associate the pic from the past to current. in my case i found an old feed mill that was still in operating but it has been there since 1890. i located some old pics showing horse and carriage traveling on the river next to the mill. i oriented the pic and will detect where the travel route was. im sure there are many other ways to do it and some of the experts here might jump in and help....but this seems to work for me. plus you learn a little bit of history.

Hello Everyone . Here again are some of my suggestions .   Shocked
When you are practicing around your yard and neighborhood here are a few places that are not mentioned yet . Where I always had great luck was around Big OLD TREES in front of old houses ,small parks ,playgrounds . The bigger the trunk the older it is , in most cases . Some oak trees can live to 200 years old easy !!  Also check on each side of old looking sidewalks that are cracked and tore up . If you live in a very, very old city that has old brick roads [very rare in our country now]- check along each side when it is safe . I have seen some old brick roads covered over with asphalt , I could tell because it had a few brick sections exposed .  Old separate garages and Alley walkways . And yes, checking your local history will give you some great tips . Going out of the city I always seem to look for the unusual or uncommon areas where stuff may fall out of pockets or pouches like old abandoned hidden trails , Horse Trails or walkways . Do not forget under docks at a lake or beach [might be underwater]  If you live at the Beach on the east coast or west coast , get out ther after a Big Storm !!
Think of possible areas where no one has Metal Detected before or areas that may not of been Metal Detected in some time like roads connected to condemned bridges [Be very careful]   Those sites may not be hunted out especially if you have a top of the line machine . But as technology advances and Metal Detectors are getting better and better , I do not know if we ever will reach a point of "Truly Hunted Out " anymore  .....Others are Welcome to comment here !!

HH...........Eugene
