The original post is more than 6 years old. There are far better machines out there than BFOs.

Yes, of course there are some PI and VLF circuits. But why not building this BFO? It is very easy to build, cheap and NOT BAD. No PI detector is so simple than this BFO. And you can use it as a pinpointer with a ferrite coil. Nobody needs a PI for a pinpointer, a BFO is good enough.
The most expensive parts are the housing and high quality potentiometer if you want. Needs no special components, no programming.
Operating is very easy. You only have to adjust the frequency and hear the beeps from the speaker.

The ETI561 BFO is one of the best BFOs I think. The sensitivity is good for a BFO, good for first threasure hunting.

I am building this BFO as a beginner detector. This is very good to learn more about building and operating a detector. My next project will be a PI detector. The good thing is, I only have to build a new PCB + coil and connect it with the BFO detectors frame.

I never said it wasn't good. My comment was about your being negative about the circuit design. If you don't like it, choose another design. We certainly have plenty here.

I´ve choosen the wrong words. I wanted to say that the part with the bias could be better in my opinion Wink It works ok but I want to experiment a bit.
What do you think about a varactor? Is it a problem because of the Q of the varactor?
And how much is the voltage across the styro capacitors? Because I´ve read about intermodulation problems of varactors who are exposed to high RF voltages. What means "high"?

I would use an entirely digital method.

can you suggest a good and easy to build PI detector? i built the dbp2010 but i still have some problems, i couldn't find all the parts in the market and i used equivalent IC that don't seem to function correctly. i need something that can detect at good depth. which one to go for VLF or PI ?

I also built the ETI 561 but depth is not so good since it is a BFO and also i couldn't find styroseal capacitor and i used ceramic ones. maybe that also affects sensitivity.

thanks
