I have built this circuit. It is easy to build. There are a couple of problems if you were to try and use it as a pinpointer.
1) it is not very sensitive. the metal needs to be almost touching the coil.
2) the led would be difficult to see in daylight
I'll play around with it a bit and see if I can get my circuit to work better

This is a clever use of the beloved Pic Micro. It could serve as a proximity detector for metal objects, such as the moving parts of a machine.
The whole thing could be sealed in epoxy to prevent moisture ingress.
This might find a place on my CNC mill  Smiley .

I am addicted to Pic Micros. How could I have ever lived without them  Wink .
