Someone that services transformers told me that transformer oil becomes radio active after many years of operation. The person that told me this sounded like he knows what he is talking about but can anyone confirm this?

Wouldn't have thought so......
But older transformer oils contained PCB's which were pretty toxic/nasty.

Apparently this only happens with the older types of transformer oils

Hi golden boy and levettp

Looks like you guys want to make me work today (I have other things to do) Yes I did hear about the Baghdad Battery which already is an incorrect statement a battery is a number of cells connected together to form a battery and the question still remains was it a cell or was it some other device that just happens to relate perfectly to an electric cell?   levettp transformer oil will not become radio active unless you place something radio active in it.

Regards Xavier

In order for something to become "radioactive" it must be irradiated with radiation. Transformers form electromagnetic fields and can induce currents and emit RF but never are or emit radiation. Some early tubes used radiactive gases for insulation and to allow the tubes to cascade current quickly for pulse generators (radars, triggers for explosives, etc) but only the gas was radioactive not the devices they worked within. X-rays are a form of radiation but are only emitted under power.
PCB's are and insulative oil that is highly toxic. Found in transfomers made mostly by GE this stuff will poison and kill you with cancers, leukemia, etc.

Me, I worked AC&W radars in the USAF. Wore a dosimeter on the job for years. Our radar could fry birds and geese if they flew by in the beam. Piccked up many
