Hoof Clanger

I was informed that, at the Firehouses, some of the horses were equipped with these as part of a warning system for those who may inadvertently be in the way when the wagons were approaching. It did not gain wide spread popularity because it had a tendency to "Spook" the horses and the invention was abandoned.
It does have a distinctive "Clang" when struck sharply with a hard item such as a stone or a metallic striker.
This item was found at the Lamar dump site with various other items each of which I will post eventually.
You just never know what you will find there.
Items I have found over the years date from the late 1800"s to around 1944. It is a very large area and after it was closed down during WWII illegal dumping continued to occur up closer to the Lamar street area. Till it too was cut off with commercial building.

I have no idea as to it's use anywhere else. I do know that they did not last long.
The gas powered motor vehicles were poised to take over at that particular time in history.
It did not take long for the horse drawn pump wagons to dissapear.
The one I have has blacksmithing marking on it which would suggest that it never got finished.
I found it with several other items that appears as if a metal working facility had cleaned out it's shop and threw it away.
Hoof covers are still in use today but for a different purpose. Show horses such as the Draft horses are sometimes garnished with a thinner version just for show. Those are highly polished and do not necessarily have a purpose.
Good question wish I had more on it but there seems to be very little background on them other than what I have allready stated.
