Go Up Go Down

These are one of the many things we come out of the Lamar dump site with.
Some if not most have their heads broken off. After all when the Japanese hit Pearl Harbor if people had anything with made in Japan on it, It got trashed.

It is kind of un-nerving to have a box of doll heads without bodies, but I do have some. Lots of arms and legs too.
The Cupie is one of my prizes. I could not find the arms............
Some are found with arms and all, but not many, as with the two beside the Cupie.
Most have lost any vestige of color but some do retain it.
Does any one else find these?

Neat finds! I found one once in a ruin of a logging town that burned down in the thirties in Oregon but heavily damaged. It was the kind with opening eyes and only one worked. Just a face with that one eye winking at me was a bit creepy  Grin

The "Made In Japan" label didn't start until 1949. It was required by US law in that year so those dolls, if so labeled, have to be from that year or newer. This isn't to contradict you but to help you fine tune the dates of your finds.

GD,
The dump site these are comming from closed down in 1945. Historical Record.
The Oak Cliff site closed down in 1936.
Some of the dolls have LWCo. Nippon on them not "made in Japan".
Some just say Japan on their back.
Although not required it is still there.
After the war Japanese products up into the 50's were labled made in occupied Japan.
We also find German products and dolls.
We have not found anything from the Lamar site that dates beyond 1945. News print on occasion and coins.
News print can sometimes be found in the lower depths where the moisture and lack of Oxygen preserved it. Very poorly but it's there.
We also find cosmetic containers dated.

"I have search farm fields for most of my childhood and discovered many artifacts doing so, if this is the same 'doll' format it had been called 'frozen Charlottes' by collectors.   dated in the mid to late nineteenth century and are also found everywhere in Europe.  They are highly prized and even have collector clubs devoted to them."[/glow]

In your first post you clearly stated they were marked made in japan. Here's what you wrote.
"These are one of the many things we come out of the Lamar dump site with. Some if not most have their heads broken off. After all when the Japanese hit Pearl Harbor if people had anything with made in Japan on it, It got trashed."

I accept your correction to your original statement but my comments are still factual.

Correction on date of closed down:
The Army Corp of Engineers in 1944 in an effort to aid the City of Dallas in their effort to curb the purtrid aroma emminating from the area cut off access by digging out an area and using the material to cover it up.
In that attempt they inadvertently created a methane gas hazard.
This did not stop dumping there completely some residence began dumping up closer to Lamar Blvd. about 100 yards away. This did not last long Commercial building in area cut that off as well.
This time frame is the era of sanitary waste land fill develoopment. The British started this practice and it did not take long for others to adopt the technique.
The City of Dallas began using old sand and gravel pits as a convenient place to dump and cover to prevent the stinch of everday debris getting into homes.
This practice has created in some instances a pollution hazard by hazardous liquids and other materials seeping into the water tables in the Dallas area. They now use areas that have impermiable strata to trap these and contain any seepage.
All for now.
