The orange  MD539  is probably what I have.  It works 'ok', but the pots are probably noisy/intermittent and hard to set, but it does work once you get it set near the threshold.
Does anyone know the operating principle?  I'm an EE so a good description would be appreciated, but best guesses are welcome. The schematic isn't obvious.  Plus there is one cap not connected on it.
I always thought that they used two oscillators.  One using the search coil and another fixed.  You listened to the beat (difference) frequency for a change in the frequency due to an inductance change from the metal. But this one and another "Bounty Hunter Tracker IV" of my son's just beeps when near something.
I know this is kinda old, but gota' try...
Don't post much.  Hope this is ok.
Steve

It's a BFO machine. A "turn on and go" for kids to use while mom or dad use the complicated machine.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

It is either silent, or it produces a constant amplitude and frequency (annoying, raspy) tone.  That is not a beat frequency, GD.
.
Does anyone know the operating principle of the orange toy (though it surprisingly works quite well) ?

I searched and I did not find a manual or even a schematic for the Orange color Metal Detector. I remember all The manuals for the old Micronta's and some Radio Shack's always had a schematic on the last page.

So much Technical stuff has been lost / disappeared on the Internet. Seems like in the last 10 years or so, a lot of cool Metal Detector websites are now gone !!! If I find something , I will post it here for you.
All I found was The next model number up [63-3001] radio Shack in the schematic picture below. 6 transistors, LOL !!!
Every question about Treasure Hunting and Metal Detectors is very important on this Forum .

Please Stay Safe.

Regards...................Eugene

hanks, but the md539 schematic posted above by vector180 appears to be it, but that shows one cap not connected. The image posted  above also looks like it.

I'm just curious about the operating principle.  The coil has 18 kHz on it.  The schematic isn't readily decipherable.
There are just two pots, coarse and fine adjust and a note on the schematic says they change the amplitude of oscillation.

From playing with it watching a scope, it appears that the metal decreases feedback, the oscillator amplitude decreases and this starts the audio oscillator.
It works pretty well as long as you keep the pots cleaned up with use.
.
f there are sites explaining operating principles in general, that could help.  Perhaps a Google is in order.

That's it, but I see no other information on operating principle and the link I posted for eBay has the instructions you can read, though it's pretty easy to figure out how to operate it without them.  And I don't do French.

Has ANYone ever seen a site with theory of operation for various kinds of metal detectors?

I may just have to open it up, take the o-scope to it and figure it out myself...
Cheers.
