I would say Never fool around that Hole unless you have a nother person with you since you cannot tell how deep it is---Try a rope and a large sinker to see If you can find out Where the bottom is !

I've heard several suggestions here that were good. I understood the hole to be too small to fit your spread hand. I'm assuming if your fist is balled it will fit?? If so, that's plenty of room for a compact video camera attached to a small pen light. Make a rig to get a video of what's in there before you go digging a deep hole only to be disappointed and have a mess to clean up.
Is the hole secured by concrete or a pipe of some kind to keep the soil from collapsing and filling in the hole? I mean . . . if I dig a hole with post-hole diggers and then cover it for two years, there's a good chance there won't be a hole there any more... That depends on several factors such as soil type and density, rainfall amounts, critter activity, etc.  Smiley

Good luck.  Great I hope that helps,
Ken

I think what you have found is the old water well. Years ago in Australia I lived on a property that had a well, yes they still use them in the outback because they dont have any water supply.
The only way to get water was to catch what water you could off the roof when it rains this is fed into the well via guttering and downpipes.  Wells sometimes do have a curved bottom too this is to allow any silt or dust that comes off the roof a place in which to settle.  Even today there are many stations in the outback that rely on rain and even bore holes for thier water supply and have large 3000 gallon tanks buried under the ground or positioned around the house somewhere.

Holes in the ground, the size of your fist, makes me think of Cenotes, and that gives me the shivers!

A cenote is formed in limestone country and often, that is all you will see, a small hole, until the top caves in, then it can be a huge hole in the ground, half full of water.... the wells that were reputed to have received lots of virgin sacrifices and tons of gold, these all started that way.

Are there any sink-holes in the area? Same form.

Its been a while since thelast post but I just now read it. I have a neat camera made for this type of situation its made by Rigid and its a Bore scope...it has 4-6 foot extensions that let you increase the length. I can go about 18 feet. It illuminates the area and you can see whats there...can't record but its just the ticket at less than $300!
