Go Up Go Down

The 1943 Dambuster Raid was probably one of the Greatest air raids of WW2..Many of our American Members may never have heard of it.

In the 50s a great movie called "The Dambusters" can out..I have a copy.

Peter Jackson of the "lord of the Rings Fame" is doing a remake ( I like Peters earlier movies..Braindead, Bad Taste ect)

However there is a problem with the new remake...Guy Gibsons ( the leader) dog was named Nigger..that ws also the code word for the dams being burst...there is a chance that if they use that word (name) in the movie, it could be baned in some countries..and at the least would create an out cry..

What a pile of dog poo...but thats being PC.

Here is an interview with Peter concerning this new film.

Go Up Go Down

"PETER JACKSON: Yeah, they thought 150 feet was the level and then they kept dropping the bomb during the tests that would just sink. It didn't bounce because it was too high and had too much downward momentum, so they had to go lower and lower, made even more difficult because they had to fly at night. . . . . They said they often just went under the power lines, these big 4 engine bombers."

There was a show on tv - pbs or history detectives maybe - not too long ago - about the pilots that flew those planes. TY for the heads up about the movie. Sue

Go Up Go Down

I ended up watching the 50s film again after posting that...I have it on VHS...what a great story...and they used real Lancasters as they were still using them back then.
There are only 2 flying now out of the thousands built..one in the UK and one in Hamilton Ontario.
I see that one flyinf around Toronto sometimes..WOW..those Rolls Royce 12 cyilinder Merlin XXX engines sound great.

The Lanc could carry a 22,000 bomb  (called a Tally Boy)...The B17 carried 8,000 pounds of bombs...the Lanc trully was The Heavy Bomber of WW2.

We built over 1000 here in Ontario.

Love that Aircraft!!!

Dean
