OK Guys need some Advice - I was asked by a local farmer to find a meteorite that he his wife and neighbors all watched hit his hay field but they could never find it- so my question is this -
it was 2 years ago and a bunch of them went to the field the following day looking for it and could not eyeball it. supposedly there has been 2 others with Md's  to hunt for it but haven't found it either.

So what do i need to do to find this thing or at least increase my chances of finding it ? ? ?

I personally have never ever hunted for a meteorite so not sure beside the MD what else am i going to need.

Oh and this field and hill area is full of snakes and holes etc. So any advice would be highly welcomed.

Well Mate i'd put the biggist coil i had on  switch to all metal and sweep the area mark out with pegs and do it in blocks 25ft X 60ft
and work the area from the middle of the field to the other end and width ways  and do it like mowing the lawn and if Mrs K
has a block as well the you should clean up if you find it

Did it hit the field?

There deceptive beast.  As a kid, I was looking at the moon with my whopping 25 power telescope one night in Tucson.

Al the sudden the whole back yard looked like someone was arc welding next door and the air turned a white / blue color.

I looked up to see a Biggin fall behind the Santa Catalina mountains.

As it tuned out, Colorado, Montana, even Ohio seen the same thing.

Did they see it impact the ground?

Did you know most meteorite only hit the ground with a thud and leave no craters?

Well see homie all I have to go by is what they and there neighbors have to say -
they claim it hit the field an know aprox where it hit -
So why the other 2 MD'ers did not find it is beyond me, it was offered to me to search the field ,
it's in readyville and not far from the battle area of readyville , so may find some CW stuff,
but ya'll know i cant do long searches like this so i am going to have to break it up,
into a bunch of small searches.

And I can't find anything online about a meteorite hitting this area either.

Is it possible it burned itself up?

or that it traveled further than they think even though they swear they saw it hit their field ??

Hi Karl, That's a fantastic opportunity! You may uncover all sorts of neat findings there! As far as the meteorites go, can't really say much on that fact. I've read somewhere though that they say most the ones you see falling from the sky (shooting stars) are all about the size of a pea or smaller! And, yes - they totally burn up before hitting the ground. So, even though they may see one, that would have quite a sound (in my opinion) if one actually did hit.
Good luck in your hunts out there! Wish I was in TN helping you out too!
 Grin

ahem, Flatfoot BA here.   I think a certain group of miscreants might want to rethink any plans they might have to lure the poor unsuspecting new Kellycochick into this den of inequity any time soon.   (especially since Homie's theme song nomination fits you perfectly).   I mean, give the poor girl at least a week or two to get into trouble on her own before you guys start corrupting her.
