The Spanish would not need to add arsenic  (and please note that I'm not saying they didn't, just that they wouldn't need to---the source of the arsenic they would have added would have been their own gold and silver mines).   It is a natural by-product of hard rock mining in most areas, especially of the south west.  Arsenic leaches out of the host rock once it has been ground to free the gold.

BA

You so right BA but the way I am reading Havens post he is talking about a cache not necessarily near a mine.

Hey Haven! A friend of my mine took a pic of a narrow entry, that had an old dried up ear of Indian corn  laying in it. In 2 to 300 years it lay there untouched by vermin, it was telling the True Tracker that, the ear had arsenic on it, and to listen to it! And that there was also arsenic underground on the loot!
And if there is much black coloring outside the entry, this is also warning about arsenic. Stay Safe My Friend!  td

Why would someone hide a cache then poison it ?? Don't make sence to me  Cool

Maybe a trap or two with possible poison release but not very likely.
