If a Spanish Conquistador put arsenic in the soil around and on top of his treasure 250 years ago would it still be toxic today ?

Arsenic has a half life of 71 years I think so yes it would be toxic for around 420 +/- .But thats in a lab, in the field you have to look at rain fall soil movement and many other things.
Arsenic poisoning in small doses can be combated with heavy intake of vitamin A so If it was me I would start taking a double dose of V A two weeks before I went into the field

Arsenic?   LOL!  That stuff is like Candy.

We have it in the drinking water here in southern New Mexico.

What makes you think that they would cart the stuff just to dump it on the ground?   Just wondering here?

 Shocked

Ain't that the truth. So much of it was dumped on farm land back in the day and used for persevering  wood most of us in the south are full of arsenic anyway.

The stuff here is Natural from the Ground type  (Organic LOL!)....

All the Kids and folks down on the border, Columbus and Polomus have banded teeth because of the levels in the water.

Do you think if they used poison they would put on soil or the treasure itself ? Did they even use arsenic or any other kind of poison that you know of? I just worried because of indications of possible  poison from open mouthed snake signs on or near symbols I have found? Thanks also  for the vitamin A tip seldom, isnt vitamin A the only one can over dose on?

I don't think they used poisons, Gasses as the Yami folks like to dwell on.

I think they would have used Hides, Stealth, and Isolation to keep to them selves.  Remember the Natives Really , Really did not like the Spanish.

I my self , really can't see the Spanish leaving any treasure markers of any sort what so ever.

They may have left some unobtrusive trail markers.  Maybe some markers indicating water to be had.

Treasure?  I don't think so.

 Cool

You can overdose on any vitamin even C. One of the most distinctive signs of vitamin A overdose is yellowish to orange skin.
I wouldn't take a high dose for more then 2 weeks then cut back to the daily recommended dose the double dose is just to build it up in your system.

Albertos Magnus, a German chemist, first isolated it around 1250 AD so you can see its been around for a long time so its possible the Spanish used it but like Homefire said why would they carry around enough to poison a mine/cache?

The Spanish would not need to add arsenic  (and please note that I'm not saying they didn't, just that they wouldn't need to---the source of the arsenic they would have added would have been their own gold and silver mines).   It is a natural by-product of hard rock mining in most areas, especially of the south west.  Arsenic leaches out of the host rock once it has been ground to free the gold.
