Go Up Go Down

Here is a story I copied from a bottle digging forum.  It's dangerous out there.

Only been digging for around five years, and that came to a screetching halt when me and my dad were buried last year. He didn't make it, and it really had me second guessing myself. A friend of mine was injured digging me out. Aftermath was a bad deal too. Took some time getting past all that. we were in some 1860's stuff in downtown L.A. A rare chance for me, and we tunneled because a skip loader had taken an area down about six feet, exposing a few privies. My dad and I were tunneling into a multi-seater, or very long trash pit for the Los Angeles Soda Works site. We were hoping for the ultra rare codd to pop out. I was in about five or more feet back throwing stuff into the entry where my dad was throwing that out into the open. Something caught his eye, and he crawled it in to me to look at. In a split second we were buried cheek to cheek with a small air pocket to breathe made possible by the large rock that was smashing the other side of my face. I was sitting upright when it happened, and my dad was on all fours. He got the brunt of it. The Fire Dept. said he had around two tons of earth smashing him, and because I was all the way back when the bank fell away, I had only two feet of loose dirt on me. When I got out I was able to dig dirt from under his chest to relieve some pressure. I was able to give him water, and he was assuring me I was doing good for him. I just got to be too much for too long.

Go Up Go Down

When I was in high school we found an old dump from the late 1800's. Made some good money that summer. The next spring we went back for more. A Rattle Snake hit my buddy in the hand before we got out of there. It seems snakes like the bottle dumps in the winter and spring...Art

Yes,undercutting is very dangerous.I have had my legs buried under mounds of dirt, but I learned that undercutting is deadly.I hope that this message gets out to people who want to dig,I'm sorry for the loss of your father.Bottling digging is very dangerous, but with care very rewarding.

Yes Definatly watch out for that.  I live near a creek and when we get heavy rains different sections of the road get undercut and the heavy log trucks have gone through a number of times
