{alt}

This photograph caught my eye the other day.

A Garrett metal detector, put together like Dr. Frankenstein's monster, like Bizarro, with most of the parts but just put together crazily. The control box upside down, the coil cord running directly from the coil to the control box, instead of being wrapped around the rod.

Turns out this is a counterfeit Garrett, made in China. And some of these fakes have found their way into the United States.

Here's the story.

Not surprisingly, Dan, we can blame the manufacturer's desire for lower cost manufacturing for this. They know full well going in that the laws in China don't forbid copying intellectual property. Sad, but true. They hand them the design on a silver platter to manufacture in one plant and the one 20 miles down the road makes them.

Consumerism is the real problem. Everyone wants those $29.00 BlueRay players. Nobody is willing to pay for American manufacture. It's as simple as that.

I need to clarify. While I do enjoy the lower prices of goods manufactured overseas, I do not condone the counterfeit machines nor would I buy one deliberately. I like that I can buy a piece of high quality electronics at a fraction of the cost that it would be if made here in America. The up side of this is that despite loss of manufacturing jobs, we gain in retail jobs as a result of lower prices and more consumer goods. We also gain in the area of advanced technology here now instead of waiting.

In years gone by, a TV could be designed and manufactured here, sell for $1000.00 and over time, drop in price to something like $200.00. That was because the design and prototyping costs had to be repaid before the prices could drop on the assembly line production a few years later. By then, the next models were coming out. You get the picture.

Today, the prototyping costs are way down due to a lot of factors. Manufacturing costs are down and we enjoy the results. And, we speak with our wallets. Who here would be willing to pay thousands for a TV set or a DVR? We love our bargains. And we pay the price.

The problem is not that Europe or America cant manufacture at a very good price it all comes down to tax let me talk about what I know, in Belgium every employee costs you three employees due to tax, pension funds, disability fund, strike fund, and so on. We worked it out that in Belgium for every Euro that you earn you only get 20c so 80c goes to the tax man and only because we have to pay for every Tom Dick and Harry that's healthy and sitting at home watching TV all day long WHY well because it's so damned expensive to employ people that we have an unemployment rate so high that it kills productivity so we have to sell at a high price, it's a vicious circle and we will never get out of it until the day that we drop taxes and force people to work.
