Go Up Go Down

IN most cases the value or hidden treasures, even if they actually exist, is exaggerated In the course of a few centuries hoar thousands of dollars grow into millions as the tales some cache of treasure are handed down, usually by of mouth, each narrator adding a little to the estimated value of the riches.

We say this all the time here, expressly the Wrecking Crew but this quote is from A. Hyatt Verrill's book "They Found Gold" published in 1936

We think we are so smart nowadays but if we look back in history at some of the ideas of the day you find out they were pretty sharp on many things.

I'm still looking for my robber's cache of 2 tons of gold carried off on horseback through a gunfight in a snowstorm though. That one has to be true right? I heard it from my brother in law's best friend's sister's boyfriend who had an uncle that was there Cheesy

2 tons of gold carried off on horseback

Funny Jones but thats what brought this up. There is a guy at A&M working on a book about Lafitte and his many treasures and I have been sharing some research with him. We got to discussing the Hendricks lake treasure and he keep asking me how the value was gotten at its been valued at 2 to 20 Million. OK but think about this Penfield   estimated it at 2 million back in the 60's at that time silver was 1 dollar an oz so each of the 6 wagons had to be hauling around 21,000 pounds of silver I don't think so. This is only one of several I am putting the numbers to right now so am sure many more legends will be brought into reality. I am not trying to disprove any legends hell I know there was silver in Hendricks Lake I saw some that was recovered but I do hope we can show that values are exaggerated.

Hello All

Its all part of what I call "Yama" syndrome This figure or treasure gets bigger and bigger with each retelling.

It is a common problem that happens with most treasure legends.

The value of anything lost always increases with time........lost treasure, the fish that got away, the girls at closing time, etc, etc, etc.

I totally agree Seldom, every time I hear those big numbers I wonder how much was it really? A little reading on Conestoga wagons puts them at around 12,000 lbs so that means there were 12 wagons right? ooops doing it again Smiley

Even one wagon load would be a significant amount I would think, perhaps even a strongbox full. Perhaps this was the silver Bowie got from San Saba to buy the slaves from Lafitte.... sorry I couldn't help myself  Cheesy I think I'm catching Hardluck's Yama Syndrome.

So true BA so true!

A map was drawn on General Yamashita's loincloth. It will lead you to 20 gajillion kilos of gold! Find the rounded marker stone with a crack down the middle ( Grin) and dig baby, dig!
