The Right to Protect ones self is something that is not Debatable.   LOL

Only if you believe that rights are God-given and not granted by society in the form of the government or the traditions of society.   What society/government confers, society/government can also  take back.   Putting that aside and assuming that the Right to Protect one's self is God-given, there are those that can and will argue that there can and should be limits on how one may defend one's self (and even more so whether the right to defend one's life includes the right to defend the fruit of one's labor and/or means of labor).   I personally think that the National Firearms Acts of 1934 and 1938 violated the 2nd amendment and the Supreme Court's unanimous decision in Miller vs United States was a major miscarriage of judicial activisim.
However, none of that changes the fact that this is not the time and place to get into a discussion about whether we're right and the rest of the world is wrong or not......especially in this thread.   This thread should NOT be hijacked into a discussion of whether gun ownership is right or wrong, especially since those discussions, especially when held across national boundaries tend to escalate rapidly.
Please try to keep the discussion to the subject at hand.

Given that gun ownership IS currently legal in the United States (or at least most portions thereof) and considering that most state allow for concealed carry permits do you (or would you if you live outside the United States and the laws in your country permitted you to) carry when in the field?  If so, how and why?

Above all, please try to maintain some civility all the way around.   I don't want to stifle debate, but I also don't want to see this degenerate to the point similar discussion have in the past when they have gotten off the immediate topic.

Then either don't carry a knife or get the law changed.   But that's still off the topic and would deserve it's own discussion in another thread.

So back to the subject at hand .. does anyone carry when going out prospecting and Treasure Hunting.. depends on the circumstances i say and where it is you go...

Personally i don't carry a sidearm (rules and regulations and all that), but if i was out in the wilds where it was known to be dangerous and a sidearm was needed as protection from mountain lions, timber wolves, bears etc whilst prospecting, then yup i would carry.

I take my trowel and a rusty old spoon  Grin oh and a big metal bar that looks like a sand scoop =) .. any tool can be used as a weapon in the right hands .. so i'd say we're all carrying.. it just depends on how much damage/ range it's got.

There is one thing they cannot stop you carrying that's a pebble - i find lots of those when i got to the beach  Grin Grin .. just need a sling  Grin Round About

Wow, I never thought that there would be so much on this subject.  But since the price of Gold supposedly going to go up to $3000.00 and oz. in the next couple of years, per Wall Street Reports, you never know who or what you might run into when prospecting. I have way to much invested in my hobby and if you have some gold on you and someone has been watching you work, Gold does strange things to a person that might want to take what you worked hard at getting. I have noticed here lately at one of the local active gold mines that they have posted guards in the area and all are carrying big auto guns. Shocked Shocked Times are getting rough and people are getting desperate. Be safe and have the tools you need to make your mark and find that yellow stuff that means so much to all of us. Smiley
