I have just been officialy told that by removing a bottle neck, with aluminium lid attached from a public sandpit, I BROKE THE LAW. What sort of idiots write laws saying yes you can use your metal detector no you cant break the surface, may as well take the batteries out. Anyone else had this kinda stupidity stop them. I am dumb founded by the mentality.

Don't hunt there!

Plenty of other places.

Follow anyone around for a hour or so and they always break a law or two.

Where do you live ? I am wondering if the person that told you that actually knows the law themselves, that just dont sound right to me.
Im in Michigan and although metal detecting is allowed you cant get into much trouble unless you find any artifacts then its a problem if anyone knows about it and turns you in, then its a fine for digging up an artifact, a fine for removing an artifact, and I think there were 2 more.
Like your supposed to know what it is before you dig it up. Crazy, guess its lucky I havent found any artifacts, hmmmm, or have I ?

I live in Australia's police state, Queensland, worse still I live in a regional town, where most of the council members are cousins. We have a local election coming up, and I am considering taking this up with the media. I had a severely disabled daughter who passed away in 2010. Throughout her life I was involved ( and still am ) in fundraising for our local disabled school and have made friends with quite a few local reporters and politicians. When you consider the amount of broken glass and council mower shredded drink cans we remove, I figure we play a fairly important role in public safety, I have had one park caretaker commend me for what I do. and yet some ********** behind a desk sits on their sanctimonious backside and says I cant do it because the grass might yellow for a week. Funny thing is those same people are about to let " Easterfest " dig as many holes, pitch as many tents, setup stages etc. which basically destroys the area they do it in for 6 months but I cant turn a sod. I know it sounds like I'm just whinging and I guess I am. But I pay bloody rates and taxes for these parks and I cant pursue my hobby, and make it a safe place for toddlers. Mongrels the lot of em. I am going to demand to see where it says I cant break the surface, and if they say it's just policy, I'll give em policy lol. Fight

I think you right have them show you where it says you cant break the ground when so many around you are and like you said not just metal detecting. There are several people on here from your country and post finds all the time so I wonder if any of them have had any run ins like this.
I wish you luck causing the public to get involved in this.

Go for it mate! Maybe you can get some support from the locals. Or maybe a letter to the local newspaper editorial department.

If your talking about a TOT lot sand set,  Get in there detect all the junk you can!   Bag and Tag it all.

When the LAW comes empty your bag of crap on the hood, ( Bonnet) of his car.

Ask him if he wants his kids playing there Bear Footed.
