Man Charged In Alleged Buried Treasure Scam
MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. -- Police on Tuesday arrested a man who they said duped a homeowner into thinking there was buried treasure on the property and then devised a scheme to pilfer $100,000 from the victim.
According to Miami-Dade police, Javier Villamizar called the homeowner Nov. 28 and, using an alias, posed as an engineer surveying the area around the homeowner's property. Villamizar told the homeowner that his equipment detected a large concentration of precious metals on the homeowner's property and asked if he could meet with the homeowner to try and locate the metals, police said.
Villamizar allegedly met with the homeowner Dec. 5 and used a metal detector to scan the property, marking the area where the metals were supposed to be.
Two days later, Villamizar met the homeowner again and deliberately dropped a broken clay pot in the marked area where he was digging without the homeowner knowing, police said. Villamizar later pretended to unearth the pot, which contained a handwritten note that was dated 1832, police said.
The note stated that there were gold bars, coins and jewels buried throughout the property. It also stated that a monetary offering should be placed on an altar and a prayer should be recited for nine days prior to excavating the buried treasure. The prayers were necessary to eliminate a curse of four generations of bad luck befalling the person who discovered the treasure. . . . . .
