I was curious if anyone has heard of the practice of taking a file and cutting some silver / gold off of coins around the edges. The filings would go into their shavings account for future smelting etc... John in Va...

yeah, it has a very long history (going back at least as far as the Romans, if not all the way back to the first coins issued in what is now Turkey.

Some pretty good sites there BA.....The punishment was pretty severe somethings including death, although it appears they would resort to clipping your ears as well Grin  John in Va
