Take heart me maties, spring is sprung Smiley or at least the plants and animals think so. The ground was frozen here until a few days ago and is now a nice muddy mess. Areas of the road that never see sunshine are wet and thawing out. Birds are showing up for a hand out on their way north. Squirrels are out and about rustling leaves looking for a few more good nuts. Some of the bulbs have pushed up and a few are flowering. Early fruit trees are budding. Rose branches are turning green. I saw some bear prints yesterday, so they have come out for a look see. The true indicator here though that never fails are when the blackberry bushes bloom. They say that we are being fooled and spring is not close yet, Sad for they are still stark and bare. Planting time for a garden here is the end of March, so I had better wait on that. I did dig some mud yesterday and found some nice trash items, 2 nails, parts of an window screen, parts of cans and a few bits of iron. I also found that my batteries are weak and need to be replaced. Any good tips on aa rechargeable battery deals? I need about 24 I guess, 2000+ milliamp that will hold up to my abuse for a few years.

Good NiMh Batteries will cost you something.
Deals are local, where do you live ?
I would look at reichelt.de (german Electronics seller),
but thats no good for International Customers.
Example : 24 (12 packs of 2) "Energizer" 2650 mAh
will cost 67.20 Euro + shipping.

wallyworld is de devil, do they have anything not made in China? How about the milliamp rating? Does it matter much for a detector. The AA rechargeable range from 100-2400 milliamp. Is a higher voltage rating more important? Some only rate at 1.2 volts. Do you guys do battery maintenance? Run down the batteries before charging or does it even matter. The good batteries are pricey, is a special discharge-charger needed? NiMh or Nicad, which is good for a battery abuser like me. Not really sure, but it seems like those NiMh batteries do not last very long and I have ruined Nicads by not taking care of them. Hoping someone knows what the deal is on batteries for metal detectors. Guess after all and all I will just buy a bunch at wallyworld that have been red tagged. Grin

The mAh Rating is very important, its the Capacity.
Example : a 2400 mAh Battery will deliver 2.4 Ampere of current for one hour. Simple.
Or 1.2 Ampere for 2 hours. In Fact it will last longer at lower Current. (non linear)
Rechargable Batteries are a complicated Topic.
NiCds are almost extinct, they are poisonous and bad for the Environment,
Capacity is very low, so forget them.
NiMh are the way to go, good Capacity and not too expensive.
Voltage of both Types is 1.2V/Cell. This can be a Problem
if your Detector is designed for Alkaline Batteries ony (1.5V/Cell)
but thats very unlikely.
To take good care of these, there are a few point to note:
- use a good Charger, a Microcontroller Trickle-Charger is best.
- dont overcharge, this will ruin the Batteries (leads to fast self-discharge)
- keep them warm during use, they dont work well at freezing temperatures (capacity will be low)
- dont overheat. super quick charge at high current is bad
- be careful when carrying charged batteries. if you keep them in your pocket
together with keys or other metal, short circuits can happen and burn you really bad.
- dont do a deep-discharge. replace battery if if you see it gets weak.
- there is no need to use a Discharger, the memory effect of NiCd Batteries is a myth
it will never happen at normal use

The best capacity/weight ratio can be found in LiIon or LiPo Batteries, but these are expensive,
need a very special Charger and they wont fit as replacement for normal Batteries.
Improper Charging of these will lead to burning or exploding batteries.

If you dont care about weight, the cheapest Batteries you can get are Lead-Acid types.
again, like the Lithium Batteries, these are no fitting replacement for normal Batteries.

I use the energizer NIMH myself.  They work pretty decent for me.  Here's another forum thread where some battery questions are answered as well.

Thanks for all the help. I was leaning toward NiCads, but have changed my mind to NiMh. I did see a review somewhere that showed that batteries made in China often do not test to their mAH rating, though most of the more expensive one's did. Here is what I gathered from your help:

1. Use NiMh from a reputable manufacturer.
2. Buy the highest mAH you can afford.
3. Slow charge before and after each use.
4. If the voltage rating is lost then discharge and slow charge several times and it will usually return.
5. Have two sets for each machine and take both sets with you.

What detector are you using?

Tesoro recommends NOT using rechargeable batteries, because they run 1.2 volts instead of 1.5 volts.  Other manufacturers may have a similar warning.
