Go Up Go Down

Hi All,
My Grand daughter came round for her sleepover, she wanted to get my old English coins out to look over, her name is Victoria so she sorts out all the Queen Vic coins.
I was laying on the carpet with her helping her find the Vic coins,I realized that I really hadn't taken a good look at them for about 30 years, I became aware that there were more than coins in the 4,000 plus coins on the carpet I recognized some "dog name tags" I had no idea that I had them found six, and about twenty Foreign coins one an Indian Head.
One particular name tag belonged to a Wing Commander Woodhouse from Whithall London I am wondering if any Brits can look him up as that is a "Very" impressive title this guy would have rubbed shoulder with  Churchill.
See the pix below..........HH.....Johnnn

I'm sure glad Victoria likes to rummage through Grandpa's treasures.

It looks like your G.P. Woodhouse was promoted from Squadron Leader to Wing Commander on 1 July 1947 with seniority back dated to 1 October 1946.

I'll see what else I can dig up that may give the UK members a leg up in the search.

I think I also found a reference to his early career in the RAF here

Johnnn Queen Victoria had loads of issue coins over the years and some of them are worth serious money, and it is the mint marks
and designers who made them which make them worth money also weather they are High tide or Low tide coins if you want to go through them I will tell you the value of them, The high tide- low tide thing is look around Britanias ankles and see the water line
and the details on the light house ETC

hope this helps

Hi BA,
You sure created a "jaw dropping" moment with that info. I had those dog name tags all those years and hadn't noticed the rank attached to it.
Now it will be interesting to see if any more info on this guy turns up...Thanks again, out of the 20 or so doggy ID's that one has the highest rank. Smiley...
Going out tomorrow WW1 and 1812 site....HH...........Johnnn

Hi RR,
I have quite a few Vic coins after sorting them with my Granddaughter I have more than I thought but most are suffering from circulation wear and tear, I still can remember finding them in change as a kid almost worn flat, I will look through them for dates and post them to you see if any have any rarity thanks for the offer I dont have a current UK coin book mine is 16 years out of date.

John, It looks like your G.P. Woodhouse could have had quite a career.

There is a G.P.Woodhouse listed as signatory for the government of the United Kingdom on this document in 1950:

ADDENDUM NO. 1 TO ARTICLE II OF THE AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE GOVERNMENT
OF THE UNITED KINGDOM OF GREAT BRITAIN AND NORTHERN IRELAND AND THE
GOVERNMENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA CONCERNING A LONG RANGE
PROVING GROUND FOR GUIDED MISSILES TO BE KNOWN AS "THE BAHAMAS LONG
RANGE PROVING

I also found out that he received his permament commission as Flight Lieutenant on 28 December 1936.   (sorry I'm jumping forward and backward in his career, but I'm presenting it as I find it).

You are welcome.

By the way, if your Wing Commander G.P. Woodhouse is the same G.P. Woodhouse that 1950 agreement, then you and Victoria have handled an item related to putting a man on the moon  Cool  (distantly, but still related).   The Long Range Proving Ground is one of the many names for "The Range" used by NASA to launch rockets from Caneveral/Kennedy.   I found that out by "Googling" Bahamas Long Range Proving Ground.
