Dales metal detector strikes gold
By Newsdesk

A CRAVEN man looks to have struck gold after unearthing coins dating back to the 15th century which could be worth thousands of pounds.

Colin Binns uncovered his haul of six groats and one penny in East Marton in June this year.

The coins are made of silver, are 92.5 per cent fine metal, and date back to medieval times.

But it is one coin in particular which is of interest, as it is in good condition and could increase the worth of the finds to up to ?4,000.

The coins would have been issued under Lancastrian Kings, Henry IV, Henry V and Henry VI between 1412 and 1427 to 1430.

They would certainly have been in circulation in the 1420s or early 1430s.

Mr Binns, who has a metal detector and combs the ground at least once a day, commented: "I found one coin and it was quite exciting. They were scattered around.

"All my finds are exciting. I have found one item in Chester worth more. I am interested in history and I give away a lot of my finds to schools."

The value of the coins is now being determined by the Treasure Valuation Committee and the Craven Museum, in Skipton, has indicated an interest in displaying them.

Meanwhile, the West Riding Detector Group found a silver medieval ring brooch on the Bolton Abbey estate, dating back to the 14th or 15th century.

It is thought the brooch would have been used to clasp clothing together.

A spokesman for the estate said depending on how much the item was worth, it may also be given over to the Craven Museum.

All of the items are with the British Museum at present and local coroner Geoff Fell recorded the pieces as treasure.
