Just wondering, has anyone ever tried doing a raffle to benefit the site? Seems like a productive way of entertaining folks with the thought of winning something, as well as helping out the site.

Peace

That would be neat. I was thinking like raffling off a pinpointer, or something "small" of that nature. Something where it wouldn't take a ton of entries to cover the cost and then some. Seems like there are enough active members on this forum to support such an idea... and at that maybe some folks would jump in just to try and win.
I know I would buy into a raffle. By the way, I won the last raffle... so send me my GPX 4500!

You have to be very careful with raffles. Many states and countries don't allow raffles if they cross state lines. Some don't allow them if they occur on a day other than the same day the ticket was purchased. In Perth, a raffle can be held without a permit as long as it takes place on the same day of the event in which it is being raffled. Like at a club meeting or something. To sell raffle tickets for a future event requires everyone running it and all sellers to have police clearance. Check with the gaming commission where you live. I'm not sure that a license for a raffle on this site could be obtained given the nature of the Internet and how far it spreads.

Auctions on eBay with the proceeds going to the site are much easier.

So GD am I hearing this right - that this forum is already registered on eBay so that people can list their item and have the proceeds go to the forums fund?
If so, please share the details of the name so I can look it up. Thanks!

That may be an incorrect assumption on your part since this forum survives on Christian's personal payment for hosting and volunteer donations. It has been discussed before. For you as a new member, here's a summary.

The discussion of paying for the forum by donation revolved around simple generosity. The discussion about selling some of our finds that we find to be wonderful but collecting dust came up. Selling them in the store here was discussed but that only garners gold for the seller to use on other things in the store. So, the prospect of using eBay to sell was proposed by yours truly. I suggested that you sell your items on eBay, put a link to those items here, and then donate a portion of your sale (or all of it if you wish) to the forum donation page.

Look at it like this. We have probably 15,000 members here of whom around 500 are relatively active and perhaps 200 or so who are very active. The buyers on eBay can total more than 20,000,000 per day! That means if you put an antique lock on eBay for sale, you have a potential for that many people to search for it and find it. I've sold things on eBay that I considered pure junk but someone else thought they were worthy.

If you choose to support this forum, make a personal commitment to donate a portion of your treasure sales to the forum. While it is possible to make a community selling block on eBay, the security issue and the delivery of sold goods by individuals scattered around the globe make it completely unmanageable. We have had members here who had great intentions of selling things for donations and then they died. Seriously. What do we do as a collective store on eBay if a member dies? It's quite impossible to manage.

So, sell your goods, keep some for your effort and make a donation from your PayPal account. It works best of all. mention the forums in your sale, which will attract members, but sell for yourself and then come back with a fistful of dollars to donate.
