Hello Anyone out there have any good tips on garnet hunting? Last year I collected a little jar of them while just playing around. I found them in sandy soil, and also saw them in along the road inside of soft "stone". I would like to be able to find one strong and big enough for my friend to practice stone cutting on. Thanks!

Muttpuppy,

If you want to be sure of finding a big garnet you can hit the Emerald Creek site. I've never actually been there but every rockhound I've talked to that has says it's the place to go. The forest service actually manages a dig there. I've never heard of anyone leaving emptyhanded. Used to cost like 10$ per day but who knows nowadays. It's only open for a short window each year.

As far as finding em I've always just panned em out in my gold bearing gravels. Another good spot to look is the old tailings left from the dredges at Warren, Idaho City, Placerville, Centerville and probably a few more. Good hunting!  Smiley

Thanks for the information. After I posted this, I found a post from Sue about the Emerald location, and made it to the site. It sure looks like fun. Think I will go to Riggins and search soon, that area being a little more friendly on my gas budget. Hope to look at the places you suggested as the summer progresses. It snowed last night, so a trip to get out of dodge is in the plans!

It's been hailing down here in the southland  Shocked crazy weather! I'd think you could find em around Riggins area, pretty much everywhere I panned up there I got a bunch of little ones. Never found any to get excited over but I have a jar of em somewhere just because they look neat.

You might check with the local gem club, I know the one down here a few go to Emerald Creek every year might be able to catch a lift. Gas definitely is a killer so carpooling is good!  Smiley

You sure are right about the crazy weather Idaho Jones. Also right about the Riggins garnets being so small. Looks like the best chance at getting some nice sized pieces for my friend would be to go to the Emerald location. I am all for new adventure! Today's adventure is to hunt the buildings at a 1902 farmstead I have access to. Seeing how the ground is covered with snow, I will just "move inside".  Wink
