Someone asked me this question and I searched the Thunting.com Archives here  and found very little . So here is a new thread to learn what Metal Detector model is recommended for hunting Meteorites . Meteorites can bring in some Great extra Money !! I researched and found three great machines : Maybe someone else can add to this list !!

Regards...........Eugene52

1. Whites Goldmaster 3 . a VLF 50 khz detector [discontinued]
2. Fisher Gold Bug 2  .    a VLF 70 khz detector
3  Minlab GP 3000  .        a DVT Dual voltage Technology / BI-LEVEL Pulse Induction Detector [discontinued]

Hello Eugen, I think the GP 3000 successors should also be added to the list then. They seem to be the prefered machines for all sort of hunting the desserts.

Regards,

Christian

Found this meteorite/tektite, whatever in New Mexico on a mountain in the Zuni Mountains, few years back, University of Miami had it for over a year, sliced it, could not figure the origin, or the actual composition, it seems to be mostly iron or even solid iron, they gave up on it, and sent it back after 18 mo, said if they ever figured the composition or origin , i would be contacted, have never been contacted, and the folk i dealt with have moved on,  it weighs 150 gram, as far as the type of detector,  I found this with a Tesoro Bandido, using all metal, but it will set any detector to singing because of being almost solid  IRON_??, i have others that are not solid and to detect them  All metal mode is required, for example, Fisher  Coinstrike, Garrett 550, Minelab advantage, and a cheap Bounty Hunter, I think It would set anything off if  an Iron content meteorite, unless using Iron mask.

Bugar , your answers are all correct , and the Meteorite is awesome looking !! I just posted the Metal Detectors that had the deepest detection depth of small meteorites as compared to many other models.....Maybe the meteorite you found came from a distant solar system ?......I am sure we will hear more on this subject from others!! Thanks again for posting Bugar and have a Great week !!.........................Eugene52

I almost forgot , here is a good link on types of meteorites :

cant say for sure from pictures but that looks pretty good, a magnet should snap to it.  to just confirm that it is a meteorite a nickel test is great, irons give a very strong reaction.  iron meteorites with large metal crystal structure (hexahedrite or octahedrite) will show the Widmanstatten structure when etched, also a good test.  A few iron meteorites do not have this structure and are named ataxites but still plenty of nickel present.

good stuff, thanks for showing, best wishes, don

whites GMT and a minelab sd2200d

Aloha,

Got my whites GMT and a couple days after that I went out to Franconia, AZ. and after someone helped me getting it setup correctly I found a 300 gram complete specimen. That was several years ago and since then I have found a LOT of meteorites both at Franconia and out at Gold Basin. Once you get that machine setup, no matter the model or brand, all you now have to do is put in the time and miles swinging that coil over as much ground as possible. Sooner or later you will walk over one and  Shocked !
I now have a Minelab SD2200d that I just acquired that will hopefully help me find some deeper specimens. Intend to start all over again and hit every spot I have marked on my gps and grid off that area.
Yep folks the best detector for hunting meteorites is the one that you "learn" and the one you use till you wear out them coil covers. Just remember "low and slow" will get them guys all the time.
aloha and be safe out there.

Smiley Smiley Smiley Best answer possible for a whole lot of questions about detectors (with a few exceptions like trying to use a land detector for shallow water hunting)  Smiley Smiley Smiley

Spend more time figuring out what you CAN do with your detector and less time worrying about whether another detector has more potential---at least until you're sure you've wrung every bit of potential out of the current detector you can possibly get (or you just happen to come across a smoking deal on a new detector).

LOL!

A old style BFO will tell you if it's Iron/Mineral or Gold.

Depth, Not so good but they Work.

Some times OLD is Good!

 Clapp

Did You Know it easier to make a large BFO coil then a PI coil?

You can put off board components on them to tune and use what you have.
