There ya go. You have your first sample set. Quartz is a 7.00 on the hardness scale and topaz is 8.00. Find a few other gemstones and you can have a pretty nice set to check your stones with.

BTW, kabierkabier being able to spot by sight is the best thing you can do. Going to the university was a real good move.

Two cheap items I would suggest. A small high power flash light and a small cheap laser pointer. On clear type gems it helps check clarity and flaws or cracks.

Whichever diamond tester you choose, make sure it can also test for Moissanite by electrical and thermal conductivity. There's a lot of them "replacement diamonds" out there.
