I sit on my back deck and watch the "shooting stars" all the time.  I'm sure 90% of them are meteorites that burn up and never hit the ground, and I wouldn't know where to look for them if they did hit the ground.  It sure is soothing to sit out there though with my head rocked back on the old rocking chair and watch the streaks of light shoot through the sky.  It's one of the advantages of living way out in the middle of nowhere with absolutely zero light pollution from anything.

i live in a small town, but over the mountains and down the canyon in the valley is Ogden City.  i love nothing more than a summer night having a fire in the backyard watching the stars.  i was watching a documentary on meteorite hunters and they were going off of reports and charts from the twenty's and then going to documents and journals of farmers finding meteors in the their fields.  they then start scanning the area and actually find the impact trail of the large meteorite by mapping out where they find the smaller stuff.  and looking at the map of their particular looking location, you can actually see the impact area trailings and the direction the meteorite was heading.  pretty cool stuff,  they were using their own type of metal detectors that were so big that they had to drag them behind a four wheeler through the field til they got a hit. I'd love to find one

If the magnet is an inch in diameter, that's a pretty good-sized hunk of meteorite (looks like it's roughly 6-8 inch across that face).

Is there a way to roughly calculate the value of meteorites? I know their are many variables.

Peace

Sean

The value is mostly the collectability.  There's not much real value as far as the mineral content.  A little bit of iron, a little bit of nickle, maybe a few other trace minerals... but the fact that it came from space will make a lot of people freak out over it and throw wads of money at you just so they can display it on their fireplace mantle.

if i had the money, i'd probably be a collector....for now i have to stick with collecting pennies that i find in the sand i guess.  does NASA purchase these from finders for scientific value at all?

Not NASA. Museums and private collectors purchase them all the time. NASA has plenty of their own.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.
