I know I am way ahead of myself here, but how does one go about selling such an item?

Thanks

Sean

First you need to get it certified by a lab and then collectors will beat down your door trying to buy it. Without the certification its just a rock with a high iron content

eBay, Craig's List, an ad in the local paper, word of mouth, Saturday night auction at the Moose Lodge.  Just make sure to get it authenticated as an actual meteorite first, because if an expert doesn't say "yeah, it's from space" then it's just another rock.

Hi Sean,
Why not contact "Meteorite Men" here:

They are sure to be able to confirm it as a meteorite  and maybe let you know a rough value....

If you've ever watched their show on the Science Channel, you'll know that they don't know anything about whether what they've found is actually a metiorite or not.  They stick a magnet beside it it, and if it sticks, they take it to a lab to be analyzed for it's mineral content.  I admire them for their tenacity in hunting meteorites, but I seriously doubt if those guys are who you want to turn to for advice on what you've found.  Watch their show so you can get tips on where and how to go hunt for meteorites, but cut out the middle man and go straight to the lab yourself if you think you have something.  Those guys will know nothing more about the metalurgical analysis of your stuff than they will about the stuff they find.  They can probably point you to a lab.  That's about it.

As it was told meteorites have other structure - part of them have more iron, part of them - have color metals and part of them have stone origin. Most of valuable meteorites have a Luna and Mars origin. But they drop on the Earth very rare. Stone meteorites have very small metal part and basically consists from stone and rapidly destroyed in the Earth's atmosphere and on the surface of land especially in acid soils. Pallasites (Brahin meteorites) it is a metal-stone meteorites 50% x 50% very rare items and their price is very high. Tektites - grin or black glass and it is meteorites too - i mean their origin is not from the Earth. Look here
