Just from the pics, I'd say it has a pretty good chance of being a meteor. The fusion crust looks right and its pretty normal for them to break showing a "normal" insides. Have you looked up the area to see if a already known meteorite is listed?

yeah, there is a record of a meteorite in the area, with a fall in recent years that has yielded some small pieces about 20-30 miles west of where I found this piece.  The few pieces I've seen from that fall are similar to the flat side of what I have.

That's a Cool piece.

its kind of pathetic the area I live in is kind of barren. There are some a distance from us, but the ground has a lot of cover. And the moisture does not preserve them well.

Nice! I hope its real! Ive been thinking about going through my rocks, I'm sure I have some meteor wannabe's in there lol. Been collecting them since I was a kid and saved a mess of weird stuff that my detector liked over the years. But I have no clue about meteorites or rocks in general. I just saved ones I thought were different.

Sounds good BA. Have any geologist friends with the tools to do some simple test? I would be checking the area twice for sure. Good Luck.

It's a rock on the ground, it's a specimen when you take it home.

A grind and polish would reveal a crysaline inside with different directions of graining. (Meteorite)

I hope I don't cross the line in saying that it looks like Rail Road boiler slag to me.:Smiley

The old wood burning boilers sometime had nails and or some erronious metals that melted down and would gather in the bottom of the burner.
Is there any rail road activity in the immediate area?

I was wondering where you were,

Anyway I think mine could be what you said because the was a very old railway Depot near where I found these?
but some of these rocks are huge and are about 30 - 40 LBS in weight and are about as big as a very large mellon?
do you know if that slag got that big.

Hate to pop the bubble but Meteorites don't have bubble holes in them.

I'm thinking Basalt here.

This one had me going for a while!

Not out of line at all, especially since I've put that forth as an explanation for other people's similar finds.
The best case for it not be Rail Road boiler slag or ore processing slag is that it wasn't found near a railroad, there was no ore processing in the area that would have required heat, AND there weren't very many other dark rocks in the vicinity........On the other hand, the majority of the dark rocks that I did find in the area where clearly coal, so it is possible that this piece of "boiler slag" got into some one's bucket when they raided the closest railroad for fuel.
It will remain a mystery until I can get it into the hands of someone who knows more about such things than I (diagnosing by pictures isn't the same as handling the specimen).   Fortunately, we've got a long-term member of our local Metal Detecting club that can either do the validation himself or has the contacts to get it done.
And for everyone that says they don't have gas holes----yeah, I agree that's the strongest argument against it being a meteorite.   That's been my sticking point all along.   But there are exceptions and there are related possibilities that are worth exploring.
