Go Up Go Down

I'm going on a trip to North Carolina next weekend. Planning on doing some rockhounding for emeralds, rubies, hiddenite, etc. Anyone know the best places to hound? I've never done it, so I don't know what to expect.

Hiddenite NC and around Franklin NC
OH YEAH Cabarrus County yields gold. The site of the first gold rush in America. I am from there. Reed Gold mine is a historic site you can tour. Its the site of the first gold discovered in America. Google it.

If you don't have a lot of time to hunt try one of the pay by the bucket sites. The Emerald Hollow Mine is a good one I have visited but there are others Google North Carolina  gems.

The  Emerald Hollow Mine is the only emerald mine in the United States open to the public for prospecting. Nestled snugly in the foothills of the beautiful Brushy Mountains, this North Carolina Emerald mine is located in the small town of Hiddenite, North Carolina. This locality is recognized as one of the most unique and interesting geological locations on the North American continent.
Teachers, Scout Leaders, other Field Trip Coordinators, book your 2010 educational field trips now!

Hiddenite is also famous as the only place on earth where the very rare gemstone "Hiddenite" can be found!

Each year, thousands of rockhounds, tourists and educational field trip participants flock to this popular North Carolina attraction to experience the thrill of finding rare gemstones in the rough. Thanks seldom. Emerald Hollow Mine is the only stop I have planned. I have heard alot about it. I didn't know it was the only place to find hiddenite though. Interesting. I have googled the subject, and found all of the mines to be in west NC. Most of which actually import ore. There were very few native ore mines. Are the imported ore mines worth the bother?

Most do import however there are a lot of creeks in Western NC that is worth the hunt. I usually pan the creeks. Don't forget to check out Cabarrus county and Reed Gold Mine. There is also a old ghost town by the name of Gold Hill. It was once a gold mining town.

Gold Hill? That sounds awesome. Where is this ghost town?
I am going to check out the other places you mentioned too. NC sounds like a perfect hunters paradise.

Imported ore don't sound good. Think I would take pulltabhunter advice and hit the creeks.

Well, just got back from Carolina. Had a great time, and found lots of gems. Over 200 emeralds, 50 rubies, 50 saphires, a rather large chunk of black tourmaline, lots of rose quartz, smoky quartz, blue sodalite, a few garnets, topaz, and aquamarine. I went to 7 different mines in western North Carolina. Emerald Hollow in Hiddenite was the best one. But they were all worth the price of admission. Mason Mine in Franklin is well worth the $30 admission. Found lots of saphires there. As soon as I get pics developed, (I know, I'm old school) I will post them. Now all I need is a good lapidary service to cut and polish my gems.
