found this rock in a mine tailing pile, just wondering if anyone knew what causes these grooves? is it some form of fossilization?

Hi,

I believe that is a prehistoric plant fossil.  I saw some like that in the Guadalupe Mountains, TX.  The mountains there are really the remains of a giant coral reef that has been thrust upwards from the surrounding earth.  There were rocks there with similar fossils in them.

thank you for your input sasha, I appreciate it.  I really need to dig into this a little bit more and see what I can find out.  Where I live was all under water by the famous Lake Bonneville that is still slightly in existance and known as the Great Salt Lake, so the area has quite a few different types of fossils all over.  Thank you all for your professional opinions.

Looks to me like fossilized worm trails in mud which became sedimentary rock.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.
