Go Up Go Down

I have a ACE 250 and had problems with falsing in sand going faster. Looking for a area with targets before slowing down to search.

Like others I found the cable was a percentage of the problem being loose causing falsing.

Yes I had it coiled and tied up the shaft. Even taped the lower shaft at the joint to eliminate movement of shaft twist.

But the thing was it would see it's own cable with just the slightest flex at the coil to shaft area above the coil.

It seemed to put the slightest twist or flex in the cable above the coil if there was to much movement. Which caused a slight amount of flex in the cable above the coil.

So I strapped the cable to the coil with two cable tie. Just before the cable goes up the shaft. Threaded from the bottom of the coil up around the cable and draw tight cable tie.

Maybe it is the sensitivity of the ACE 250 that makes this a problem.
Plus a few ground balance issues? (Turn off and back on for new area resets ground balance)

Love the ACE 250.  Kiss

Anyway after strapping at the coil it got so much better and stable.

A lot of random falsing went away after this.   Wise

Does turning it on and off help with salt water discrimination? I will try that when I am out next.. Shocked

Yes, it does. While there is no ground balance adjustment, the machine tunes itself to local conditions during power up. Try it. You'll see that it improves your search conditions.

Hi Xavier. I am in George on the southern coast. Lots of beach to dig up down here.... just not so many people and loads of nasty currents... BTW... I tried the reboot method and had a bit of sucess but no finds in the wet yet... I had to discrim out the first 2 or 3 notches and knock my sensitivity down to about 5 notches too but it worked... What a lekker beach day!! Even went for a swim after my decectoring  Cool

In the wet is a big clue as to why you are having problems, mate. The salt water will cause instability for ANY metal detector no matter how good the ground balance is. One more solution is to turn down your sensitivity a few notches and try it again. Do the retuning I suggested with that turned down and it should stabilize a lot.

One thing most people don't seem to understand is that the sensitivity control does not affect depth. It affects the audio sensitivity which can mask some of the warbling you get from ground effect in salty beaches. The salt water contains so many minerals that the detector reacts to it causing audio responses. Inside the detector electronics, the audio is developed from the difference signal of the eddy current detection versus the outgoing signal - which is pure. The eddy currents develop on the surface of a target and the minerals can appear to be a large surface area of very thin metal. In effect, it IS that sort of thing but it can't hold a magnetic charge for long. Changing the sensitivity by lowering it a little will keep those signals from becoming audio in your headphones.

To the hard core technicians out there, yes. I simplified things. This has to be understandable to the masses, not just the geeks like me (and you).

Lots of folks report Good Depth and Targets just buy turning down the Sensitivity a bit.

Could even be the way you swing the Coil.  Do you keep it Level?

Hi Biltongboy

I build a PI detector that I can only use on the beach, wet or dry. I have found 16Kg worth of sinkers while I was in J _Bay. I also build a VLF detector and used it on the beach but it was quite uselss in the wet. One thing that I did find with the PI was if I went from dry to wet I did get false signals but if I stayed in the wet it was behaving great. There are some VLF detectors that are designed for the wet but the Ace 250 is not one of them.

All the best
Xavier

So you build your own PI detector? IMPRESSIVE!!!! Is it water proof? And if you had to build me one? What would it cost me? hehehehehe

Well at the moment I'm recovering from all my Operations and in a few weeks time I'm going for radiation so I cant tell you when I will be able to get back into it as I have the left side of my face that is paralyzed and the left eye wont close. I also have blurred vision with the left eye but that is due to the way that they did the surgery and will be corrected soon.  The detector that I build only has a waterproof coil, I was planing to make the machine waterproof too but I never got round to it, depending weather I will continue farming or not will be a deciding factor as to when I will start with this project. (could be sooner than later)

Regards Xavier
