Hi

New to the forum. Just had a couple of questions on an older garrett. It's an adsIII master hunter 7. Any hints to working it. I've been using it for about a month and as long as I can afford batteries for it. Has anyone had experience with this model? I am noticing that it cuts in and out at times and is very erratic in signal at times also. At one point it completly turned off and couldn't get it turned back on. So I took the face plate off and found that if I push on the battery holder I can get it to turn on and off. Is there a known problem or a simple fix for this. Because of this I don't feel that my signal is strong enough or my settings are getting skewed not allowing me to find anything other than shallow nails. I know there is more in the ground as my current house was built in the mid 1800's. I have found some indian heads, a shield nickel, merc dime and some wheaties and also alot of random junk (which is expected from the era of burying trash)

Another issue I think I am having is that when I mark something, pinpoint it and then start to dig I can't locate it. So i try to pin point it and it still says the same depth and location. This is after I dug past the indicated depth and wider. I am I picking up the iron in the soil (dirt is turning orange at this point) or do i still need to keep diggin!

Any help would be greatly apperciated. Thanks

Thanks for the reply!
However, I have read the manual several times and I am able to adjust as directed. I guess my experience is low and need some help from someone who has more exp. with actual use of the unit and has had the same issues.

Thanks again!
Must be no one has worked with anything this old in a while!

Thanks.

I did see that before as well, but I printed it and will use it for an operation/tuning manual. As with all forums, I have done extensive searching on the topic before I post anything, but I didn't find anything that was very helpful except for that article.

I did however find that the reason that it is cutting out is that the batteries snap into the holder ok but are not tight in connection. So I think that from swinging and the rattle from setting the unit down cause intermittent battery connecting issues. So I am crimping the connector a little tighter on the female side of the holder and the battery, snapping them in and then pull them out just a little so they are tight. I hope this helps anyone else having trouble with the holders in these units.

Thanks again for your help Paul.

I have the same detector, but haven't used it much. My mother bought it and since she was never using it, sold it to me. It seems to work with a steady signal, but I really don't even know how to adjust it properly. I did download the instruction manual the other day and intend to start learning it very soon. Good luck.

Those 9 volt batteries are a PITA, aren't they?  I consider their use a design flaw in an otherwise superb detector.  Bending the female contacts in a slight amount helps and is usually eventually necessary.  Also, try putting a couple of layers of masking tape on the base of the batteries.  This will make them fit tighter in the tray.

John
Okay, my suggestion about the tape didn't make a lot of sense when I re-read it.  Put the tape across the bases of the batteries and the battery holder.  This puts pressure downward to keep contact.

John

Thanks for the tips John, I did however though up grade to an Etrac. But I will still be using the MH7 because it is still a great MD.
