I'm looking forward to warmer weather and taking advantage of the waterproof ability of the AT Pro. Anyone here tried it out yet? Also interested in how it handles surf.

I'm guessing you really mean how does it handle salt water versus fresh water or normal ground. Surf is a condition and even Lake Michigan has surf now and again.

Yes, you are right. I meant salt water when I said surf. I plan to use mine in fresh water this summer, then some salt water use in the fall.

I do recall some folks here reporting using it in salt water but for the life of me, cannot recall if the reports were positive or not. Knowing Garrett and their engineering, I'd be inclined to believe it was all good. Try a search of this site. Upper right corner on every page.

The reports I've seen suggested that it did'nt like the salt as much as the fresh water and with it if you are going to use it in the water then Ground Balance it in the water otherwise it runs rough.

VLF and salt have there quirks but you can make em work.

No, I don't have one.

No , I've never used one.

But I'm willing to bet it works just fine if you play the game right.

The AT Pro is next on my list to purchase, and I had some minor concerns about its operation in salt water environs. Garrett says it can work in salt water, with proper ground balancing and at times, the sens has to be reduced in order to minimize chatter. Their video of it being GB'd in the surf is most reassuring.

In the course of my readings, many users have reported success with the AT Pro in salt water. Assuming their declared locations are correct, and making note the general salinity of the waters accessible to them (please refer to

) The general salinity of the west coast of the USA is similar to my neck of the woods, so reports from AT Pro users in that area would have significant correlation to the environmental factors here.

I'm no electronics tech but If I recall correctly, the saltier the water is, the higher the electrical conductivity it is capable of. Therefore it would stand to reason that the AT Pro would have an easier time working in less-salty waters/ brackish water. Since I have no plans to use the machine in the Dead Sea, it should work well for me. Your mileage may vary. Smiley

I have been using my AT Pro in the sea for two days now.  I love it.  It has a few quirks, but I have now found two rings and about 3,000 yen in clad ($40).

Always ground balance.  Also if you change depths, say from knee-high to waist high, you might want to ground balance again.  I had the sensitivity turned all the way up -1 bar. For me, the machine falses constantly at VDI 43.  If it isn't falsing then perhaps there is some mineralized clay or something under the sand here.  In any case, I just eliminated 40-43 (which is usually foil anyway) and the machine worked flawlessly.  Now I just wish that this detector had an imaging function like my GTI 1500 so I could avoid scooping up cans and larger targets.

Below is a ring I found Yesterday in knee-high water off of Kise Beach, Okinawa.

Mark when you use your pinpoint mode the lenth of the signal will tell you how bit the Target is and if it is a can ETC
the signal will be shorter one way than it will the other,

Hope this helps,  AU
