dpease your not doing anything wrong other then maybe paying to much attention to the screen and not relaying on the sound. I think that is one reason so many new folks to metal detecting have problems learning their detectors. Most old timers don't even care if their detector even has a led screen I know I could care less.

Seldom is correct. With practice you will be able to notice differences in audio signals. That said, snaptops are difficult differentiate.

I am some what new to electronics, but so far ever thing I have read said that tones are more accurate then meters, Homefire is right, after some time you will learn a different between good tones and bad tones, Best of luck. Charles Smiley

All so note all my detectors are based upon tones. Charles Smiley

 Tones are good for sure.

But the AT Pro will sound just like a silver Quarter at 4 to 6" when over a aluminum can at a depth of 10" are more.

Just the way it is.

I guess it is close to the same signal of a quarter laying flat at that depth.
Seen this time and again, on land or sandy beaches.
Large pieces of aluminum confuse the machine.
Oh well.
It is just a machine, we interput after hours and hours of use..

I have only had my AT Pro out a couple of times (purchased in Apr), I found the sounds it makes, is really what you need to be looking/listening for. I have found there is no difference in alum and nickels though.

In the pro mode you get highs, med and lows, and the med grunts for small gold rings and  chains are a blessing.
You also hear the tone change as you go over iron, from beginning to center and passing over the other side. (All three different sounds.)
But a distinct clear tone over other metals, Silver, gold, aluminum, lead, nickel, clear and sharp.
Unless it is next to iron are say a bottle cap. Then a little grunt like static.

Not the same bell tones you hear in standard mode.
Hence the name Pro Mode. Takes a little getting use to.

Throw out some bottle caps a few coins in between, a piece of silver and gold where you can see them. Listen to the sounds close in pro mode each one makes.

Compare that to the sound in standard mode. Lay some close together, see how far apart for the At Pro to distinguish one from the other that you can hear with the DD coil.

Now sandwich them between a sheet of card board and listen again. See if you can pick the sounds out. No peeking !!!

Now bury them in your test garden. Listen to the different sounds say at 4" or 8" or 12" will be heard for the same metal. A little more muffled.
You will learn the sounds for your machine.
You will then be ready to better interpet the sounds when hunting.
