I just bought the Garrett Seahunter Mark II and it came with standard 8" coil. I wanted to ask is the larger coil worth the extra money? Most sellers are saying to first search area with 8" and then use larger coil, is it really necessary to search twice, could the larger coil not make short work of search area and leave the smaller coil behind?

Give it some time. It's already one really powerful machine. I don't use the larger coil except when diving on wooden wrecks.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Thank you very much for your time. Can I ask you, do you find an underwater pinpointer of any help? I have been reading about a new one on the market for quite a price, 160$.

I am finding in these very early days of getting to grips with my machine that I am unable to see very well when I start moving the seabed around. Any tips on what to do in that regard would be very welcome, thank you.

A friend of mine uses one and swears by it. I tried it and found that it wasn't to my liking. I use a large sort of scoop and usually snorkel when I use it so there is one huge tip I will give you.

Get a large plastic tent stake and tie it to your waist. When you find a target, stick the stake in the ground at a mentally measured spot from the target. For example, I stick it into the sand at an angle of about 330 degrees and one foot away. When I use the scoop, I hold the stake and use it to keep from pushing myself away from the target with the scoop. The detector is tethered so it floats nearby but both hands are required to recover a target. Tent stake in one hand and scoop in the other.

If you always stick the stake at the same relative location, it solves the problem of moving around the seabed.
